In the Birthplace of Bermuda Shorts, the Style Is Always in Season—and Ever Changing

The year is 1916. World War I is raging, and you’ve just been deployed to the Bermuda Garrison. As a born-and-bred Englishman, the scorching island climate is a stark contrast to the cooler temperatures of home. Your thick woolen uniform feels unbearable in this heat. You enlisted to fight the Central Powers, but no one said anything about fighting heatstroke. What do you do? Naturally, you take a pair of scissors to your trousers and create a makeshift solution to the sweltering temperatures. “We saw this vintage French aesthetic on the F/W’20 Runways and with the rise in Black models, it was inevitable to see the aesthetic on brown faces — contrary to what we’ve seen historically.

When you think of French Renaissance artwork, it’s devoid of Black faces, but Black culture and French culture are not mutually exclusive. We created images inspired by renaissance-age French portraiture through the Black lens with some of the season’s finest garbs to match.”
