SPACE COWBOY (2019)

by Alexander-Julian and Emmanuel Monsalve

A story of love and acceptance. We often view new cultures and foreign entities as threats to what we know, but when given the opportunity these new cultures can enhance our outlook and open us to a greater existence.

The female subject in this story represents a beautiful otherworldly being that finds itself in a new surrounding where she’s immediately detained and seen as a threat. The two male subjects represent the opposite realities that exist in that environment. In the end, the realities converge and only one is able to accept and love the new foreign being. Together they enjoy a new enhanced reality.

I chose Western-wear and Space Obsession to portray this story because these two timeless trends represent different mindsets and philosophies in America. Being a native born Texan, I consider Western-wear an homage to pride and classic Americana, while the Space Obsession represents the world’s curiosity for a new world as an escape. The themes were visually inspired by Kozaburo a Japanese-American menswear brand and MM6 Maison Margiela’s 2018 collection.

Meet Don Toliver, the Travis Scott-Protégé Making Houston His Own

photos by Riot Muse.

It was November 18, the day of Astroworld Fest, as I was driving down HWY 59 listening to “Can’t Say,” but it wasn’t Travis Scott the radio DJ was yelling about – it was Don Toliver, the young Houston rapper featured on the track. Back in August, the night before the release of his chart-topping platinum album, Scott co-signed Don Toliver as the new “young Houston legend.” Toliver had caught the eye of Scott through a mutual friend and was brought out to Hawaii to work on the album with, where Toliver says he created some of the best music he’s ever made.

Days before Astroworld dropped, Don Toliver had released his own project titled Donny Womack, bringing his melodic, high energy sound together in an album inspired by R&B legends like Bobby Womack and Sade. Much like the works of his mentor, you’re sure to hear someone riding around Houston blasting Don’s “Backend” or “Diamonds” these days – something we experienced firsthand while shooting the rapper and his hometown friends outside his favorite corner store.

We caught up with Houston’s newest legend in his own little corner of the city, Southwest Alief Texas, or “The SWAT,” to talk home life versus tour life, his R&B influences, and hanging in Honolulu creating Astroworld with La Flame.

Who were the guys you brought out to our shoot?

“People who helped me find my way, people who helped me gain my own. They taught me more in the street than I learned anywhere else.”

“nigeria's okada bikers could be the freshest people on earth”

— Highsnobiety

It might seem surprising, but some of Nigeria’s sharpest sartorial efforts can be found on the backs of the motorbikes zipping through the streets of Lagos. The bikes are known locally as keke or okada, a play on now-defunct Nigerian airline Okada Air due to their riders’ ability, albeit terrifyingly, to get you from point A to B. Riding the streets of Lagos all day can leave your eyes vulnerable to all kinds of dust and debris in a city of 21 million, and the bikers protect their peepers with pure steez.

As many Nigerians will testify: no matter the situation, style is never worth sacrificing. You’ll frequently find okada riders decked out in the most extravagant eyewear, from large embellished hot pink frames to gold-trimmed cat-eye lenses. If you’re going to hit the Lagos streets, it’s got to be done in style.

I teamed up with local photographer Stephen Tayo to capture the infamous okada bikers of Lagos in the most lavish eyewear of the season.

With their lack of appropriate headgear and outrageous, sometimes comically overloaded cargo, the okada riders aren’t always popular with government and locals. They are usually depicted as rough and rowdy biker boys, but for okada riders, ferrying people and goods to and fro is a no-fuss way to make a living.

Despite numerous attempts to remove okada from Nigeria’s roads, they have survived time and again, and their drivers are all the more fly for it.
